I find there is also a constant need to remind all humans, all Christians, and especially leaders, of the Creator in whom we all depend. That’s what rest does—it first reminds us of our dependency on God. Rest also makes us more compassionate people.

Many of us are way too hard on ourselves. We take ourselves too seriously to the point of feeling guilty when we prioritize rest. We have limited ourselves to self-imposed obligations which eat precious time not realizing that God has something so much richer for us. We allow ourselves to be manipulated by others about what it is we should be doing (yes, this often occurs in the church and especially among women and moms).

My journey into the wilderness began with a simple prayer for brokenness in October 2011. After reading a few key paragraphs from a book, followed by the statement in Luke 18:13b, “God, have mercy on me a sinner” and Jesus’ response to that statement, “For everyone who humbles himself will be exalted (Luke 18:14b NIV),” I remember distinctly thinking, “I want to live like that, humbled before the Lord.” I followed this revelation with a simple prayer, “Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
