My daughter is quite dainty. At three years old, she likes dresses, nail polish, and lip gloss. On one morning in particular, while I was applying make-up in the bathroom, she asked to use my blush. I explained to her that blush is for big, BIG girls like mommy, and not for big girls like her. The inevitable response was, “Why?” I franticly searched my mind for an appropriate, yet quick response. Then I said, “Because mommy is covering bumps and marks in her face because she doesn’t have smooth skin like you.” To which she responds, “When I get to be a big, BIG girl, Imma have bumps and marks in my face and wear make-up like mommy.”
On the other hand, she has some Tom Boy factors as well. She likes to wrestle. She started beating up her father and me at a fairly early age. Most of the time, she is the instigator. While riding home from the grocery store, she will pronounce from her car seat, “Dad, I’m gonna beat you up when I get home.” Then the trash talking begins (and that’s her father’s fault).
I noticed a change in her a few weeks ago when her father initiated a “Beat Down Session.” When he announced, “I’m going to beat you up.” She responded, “No Daddy, Jesus said be kind one to another.” I said, “That’s right baby, teach your father how he is to behave!” I love the fact that they teach her biblical principles in school, but that “kindness” lasted for about two weeks.
Now she’s back to instigating. How quickly we digress? We are shepherding the heart of our cute little sinner with a prayerful hope that she will be comforted to the image of Jesus Christ.
“People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Will we all be as innocent, submissive, and teachable as little children?
