Episode #245 Voices of Lament with Natasha Sistrunk Robinson and Mariah Humphries: Today I’m glad to explore a topic that doesn’t usually make the headlines in our newsfeeds but one that certainly deserves some airtime in our souls. We’re talking about lament — what it is, why it matters, and who some of our best teachers are in this practice. I’m glad to welcome two guests today to help me host this conversation: Natasha Sistrunk Robinson and Mariah Humphries. (Credit of episode description above given to The Next Right Thing Podcast).
Lament is a spiritual discipline, it is for the benefit of the church. It is normally something that is done communally, and so if you don’t have a history or a practice of it, then the people who have done it and have a history and a practice of it are the ones to lead you through [lament].
Natasha Sistrunk Robinson
In this episode, I have the privilege of talking about my new project Voices of Lament and the significance of hearing about the topic of lament from women of color. I get to share insight into my heart behind this book project including why I felt it was important to recognize women as leaders in our culture and in the Biblical context. Mariah also shares her thoughts and experience in contributing to the Voices of Lament project and her gratefulness that the topic of lament and women of color was being addressed. We also unpack what it looks like to go through the practice of lament and beyond in our culture today.
I love that the means and the way this work is presented is communal. And as I read the voices of lament in this book, I get the sense that each contribution feels like a rising tide, a voice of leadership and also of beauty, pain, suffering and hope.
