Episode 31: #GriefAND Advent featuring Bette Dickinson. Bette is a prophetic artist, writer, and speaker who invites audiences to connect with God through visual parables of the spiritual journey. Through creative communication, she helps her audience awaken to the beauty of God and His Kingdom and see more clearly the eternal realm in the heart and in the world. Through her work, Dickinson helps her audience connect the inner life of spiritual formation with the outer life of mission. Bette earned her Masters of Divinity with an emphasis in Pastoral Studies, is ordained in the Reformed Church in America, and serves with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in Spiritual Formation. She is author of Making Room in Advent: 25 Devotions for a Season of Wonder (2022, IVPress).

There are still mountains that need to be lowered, there are still valleys that need to be raised up there are still crooked places that need to be made straight and that heart of advent is taking an honest look at those things and preparing ourselves through repentance and preparing ourselves through grief, where we need to receive the Lord and prepare ourselves to receive what His kingdom really looks like.

Bette Dickinson

In my conversation with Bette Dickinson, we discuss the importance of art and the creative process in being able to approach grief and work through the traumas that we have experienced. Bette shares her own experience and insight with the creative process and how it has allowed her to enter into lament and tap into the emotions that come with that, rather than trying to escape it. Our discussion then shifts to the topic of advent and what it means for the church and Christianity. We unpack the definition of advent, how the idea of grief and lament ties into the time of Advent and that the reason Jesus had to come was because of our brokenness.
